"It was Saturday night and I was home because I didn't feel so good on account of being kicked out of school. Dad was laying around the house and drinking because he'd lost his job when they laid off so many men down at the factory. Mom was over in Acton with her sister because she could get day work there, and she had the two little ones with her on account of them being too young to be home alone.

"I made Pa dinner like he asked and brought it to him on a dinner tray. Dad was real mean and acting funny like he does when he drinks. He said the dinner was no good and I ruined it by overcooking. I said I didn't ruin nothing, and that it was his stomach ruined from drinking. He got real mad and turned red.
