It had been a scorching August day, and the men of the Fifth Regiment of Uhlans, commanded by Oberst Ernst von Bruckmann, were as weary as their horses after a day of hard riding to occupy Colmar in Alsace-Lorraine. To begin with, the officers of this prize body of Prussian cavalry were disgusted with their orders from the General Staff which committed them to an occupation of a provincial town far from France itself, when their compatriots had already won gloriously resounding victories near Sedan and Rouen, that feudal city where the legendary Joan of Arc was betrayed by the Burgundians d delivered over to the English to be burned at the stake as a sorceress. And of these officers, the elegant young Junker nobleman, Kapitan Heinrich von Luber, was the most indignant and outspoken against the inglorious role which his regiment had been assigned.
