The working girl shows a kind of independence simply by going to work. She doesn't face the social disapproval today as she would have thirty or forty years ago, but we still have traces of the old notions, and she will often hear people express a belief that her place is still in the home. If she doesn't have a home yet, the refrain will be that she ought to get busy and find a husband. But for her own reasons, she has the guts to find a job and at least make a start toward earning her own living.

If her job puts her in contact with a male boss (if she doesn't find herself submerged in a typing pool or some other all-feminine situation), she will probably begin to form a mental image of her boss that fits her past experience. Irene Silverman, in her book Nine to Five and After, quotes a woman who had gone through that and how it affected her when she lost her first boss: "I've often thought of leaving my job... Three years after I came, the head of the department–my father image–was fired... I was all shaken up. I couldn't understand why the people who'd worked for him a long time didn't protest..."
