Jody stood out on the hot sidewalk thumbing a ride. Normally she wouldn't have hitchhiked by herself. There was no telling what kind of weirdo might offer her a ride, especially in Los Angeles: Kook Capital of the World. This was her first exception, and it wasn't entirely her doing. The fact was her roommate and cousin, Sue Hendrix, had let her down once again. And that's why she was standing on the sidewalk by herself, becoming more and more aware of the eyes looking at her; the eyes staring from behind windshields at her young, innocent body; the eyes glaring, exploring, caressing. She could feel them on her skin and on her clothes, probing through her floppy chambray work-shirt and her snugly fitting blue jeans, piercing through to the flimsy bikini she wore underneath, next to her warm flesh.
